Specialized Therapeutic Group Care

Carlton Manor operates three – seven day a week Therapeutic Group Homes in residential neighborhoods serving 28 children, youth, and their families. Facilities are under 24 hour supervision, and typical staff ratios are 1:4. Program youth attend a variety of community schools. Weekend programs exist at the three homes for children who do not go home over the weekend.

Families and youth are required to participate in weekly family and individual therapy. Daily therapeutic programming consists of focused activities. Therapeutic skills groups are conducted daily and range in a variety of topics including, but not limited to anger management, cognitive reasoning, problem solving, social skills, coping skills, and goal setting and review. Organized therapeutic recreational activities occur for a minimum of an hour a day and encourage the development of problem resolution skills, sportsmanship, and age appropriate behavior. Community outings aim to help re-integrate children into demanding social situations where they can learn, but also apply and test the skills they have been developing throughout their time at Carlton Manor. The treatment model focuses on strength based interventions which aim to increase the child’s self-esteem and foster development of an internal locus of control.

Case management is offered to youth and families to assist in resource allocation and improve communication between school and the treatment team.

Since June 1980, Carlton Manor, Inc. has provided an environment of compassionate care, support and high quality services through our Therapeutic Group Care programs.

The program is designed to help emotionally handicapped (E-H), severely emotionally disturbed (SED) and at-risk children and youth ages 6-15 become successful in their family, home and community environment and to reduce the potential placement of these children in acute inpatient, juvenile justice commitment, or long-term mental health residential placements.

Sixty percent of our program participants are in the custody of a relative or their biological or adoptive families, 40% are in the custody of the State of Florida. Our ultimate goal is to provide a compassionate, safe and stable environment which will help them to experience success at home, in school and in the community; and to reunify, strengthen and preserve the family.
